Training Show

The Cutting Room has served as our Training Show for four seasons and won’t be returning in 2024. You will have free rein to pitch any idea you choose for its successor. Game show, docuseries — no idea is too wild to be considered!

  • Semester 2 2023: The Cutting Room: Locked & Loaded

    A quiz show with a twist. Roberto the robot hosts comedians from across Melbourne as they answer questions about popular culture.

    Semester 1 2023: The Cutting Room: Talking Back

    The Cutting Room: Talking Back is a news talk show which explores the overlook contributions of Women and Gender diverse people in the media industry. We’ll be reporting on and interviewing the people who are trailblazing against misogyny and making their voices heard with a variety of industry based guests and cast of lively hosts!

An RMITV Presents… production is funded directly by RMITV. These types of productions will have access to RMITV’s edit suites and equipment at no cost to the production subject to availability.

  • Semester 2 2022: Night of the Living Haunted House Attractions

    “Night of the Living Haunted House Attractions” is a choose-your-own-adventure horror-comedy web series. It asks the audience to consider what they would do if they were in a haunted house on Halloween night, complete with a colourful cast of supernatural characters.

    Semester 2 2021: New Normal

    New Normal is about two savvy journalists setting out to document how people are adapting to the 'new normal' in a post zombie LGA. Each episode they go to the home of an eccentric new character to interview them. It quickly turns (pun intended) from professional to personal when they get too close to the story...

    Semester 1 2021: Fruit Salad

    It's an absurdist sitcom starring fellows earnestly adapting to the ever-changing social climate of young Australia…oh and there’s a silly puppet as well.

    Semester 2 2020: Mask Off

    A masquerade party turns deadly when host Henry Ghoulding III is found dead, hanging from the balcony, and foul play is to blame. Six party guests are called into questioning. The police have determined – for one reason or another – they may have wanted Ghoulding out of the picture for personal, financial, or political gain. Armed with a series of conflicting confessions, can the police discover who orchestrated the murder?

Short Film Grant

RMITV’s short film grant is funded by RMITV. These types of productions will have access to RMITV’s edit suites and equipment at no cost to the production subject to availability.

  • 2023: Fotoautomat

    FOTOAUTOMAT is a romance film with a twist, we follow Elise a serial dater and Gabriel a hopeless romantic as their paths cross at a mysterious Photo-Booth. The Photo-Booth sits silently waiting to announce their destiny, but Gabriel and Elise don’t know that. The film will romanticise Melbourne and it’s cafe culture, emphasising the intimacy of crossing eyes and patience, what love used to be before social media. It is set in modern day Society, we’re looking for anyone creative and driven to help make this project come to life!!

    2022: Last Chance

    “Last Chance” is the story of Sally, a venue supervisor at the local family bistro/pokies venue. At the beginning of her shift, she is informed that there are three men who need to be cut off from the bar, a shifty patron is sniffing around the pokies, and one of her staff is currently in a screaming match with their boyfriend. On top of that, an unlikely customer wins the grand jackpot, setting off a massive argument with some regulars. Sally must overcome these challenges alongside staff and security guards, as her job is on the line.

    2021: Lifeguard On Duty

    Lifeguard On Duty is a mockumentary comedy following the lives of four lifeguards, Duke, Cazza, Queenie and Brian, of Clontarf Community Pool over the course of one summer. The lifeguards must band together with pool manager, Carole and front desk employee, Emma, to save the pool after an inspection goes bad.

  • 5 Foot Step

    Five Foot Step is a dungeons and dragons livestream that takes place entirely within a virtual environment out of RMIT Studio B utilising Unreal Engine to create a fully immersive Dungeons and Dragons experience. In collaboration with the Melbourne Dungeons and Dragons Adventurers League.

    The Buckley Sessions

    In the tradition of RMITV programs designed to showcase underground and emerging local talent, join a different kind of host for a much more musical tonight show. The music is live, the comedy is improvised and the guests are wild!

Flagship

RMITV's Flagships are pitched by our members (aka, you!) and produced with the help of RMITV! These productions are here to give you the opportunity to establish a body of work, and upskill your producing and content creation abilities.

RMITV’s Flagship Production is a production that plays a key role in the branding of our organisation, creating opportunities for members to work together on a large, exciting production and having the ability to leave a lasting legacy at RMITV. 

We're looking for content that can be made for Channel 31 and will have a sturdy foundation to last a few seasons. Ideally, we are looking for 25 minute or 50 minute episodes, over an 8 episode season taking place in Studio A. Please note, that being accepted for a Flagship does not secure a second season as renewals are based on show performance.

  • 2022: Wait… We’re Live?!

    A late night show with a theatrical twist. Set in a bar and featuring 'The Host' accompanied by a thoroughly unhelpful pair nicknamed 'The Hecklers', bringing you the best from Melbourne's comedic and music scenes.

    2015: The Leak

    An incisive and satirical look at the events making news as each week regular hosts are joined by a team of roving correspondents and special guests.

    2012: Live On Bowen

    Live On Bowen is a one hour, live-to-air late night talk show featuring celebrity guest interviews, live music, stand up, sketches and comedy segments.

    2008: Studio A

    Studio A is an hour-long live variety, comedy and sketch program produced as the RMITV Flagship production between 2008–2011 and was hosted by Dave Thornton and then later Tommy Little.

    Supporting cast included many up and coming comedians and media personalities. The show featured weekly celebrity guests and an array of Melbourne's up and coming talent. Guests included Peter Helliar, Colin Lane, Wayne Hope, Rove McManus and Adam Richard.

Animation Initiative

RMITV’s Animation Initiative is funded by RMITV. These types of productions will have access to RMITV’s edit suites and equipment at no cost to the production subject to availability.

  • 2022: Graveyard Shift

    When Brian rises from the dead, he finds an unexpected companion in Jesse, an employee at the local convenience store. Excited to explore the world, they embark on a late-night adventure - but Brian soon realises that a second chance at life comes with gruesome side-effects…

    Semester 2 2021: Cock & Bull

    ‘Cock and Bull’ is about a Cowardice Chicken and an Angry Bull who must join forces to defeat the Dreaded House-Fly, or else they’ll go crazy!!!

    Semester 1 2021: Body & Soul

    'Body and Soul' is about a clumsy Zombie and a cowardice Ghost who must join forces to change a flat tyre, or else they’ll succumb to the dangers of the night. It is a 2D animation, and all levels of experience are encouraged to apply!

1. Steps to Pitching

Thinking about a pitch? Here’s the steps you’ll need to know when pitching to RMITV.

  1. Decide what RMITV Production type best fits your needs.

  2. Fill in the pitch submission form for your chosen production type.

  3. You will be contacted by email with all preparation for your pitching session.

  4. You’ll pitch in front of our content committee who will assess your pitch against our selection criteria.

  5. If you are green lit by the content committee, your project will be assessed by the RMITV SCT Inc. Board and you will be informed of the outcome.

2. Tips for Pitching

Decided to pitch? Here’s a list of things to keep in mind when pitching to RMITV.

When you present your pitch to RMITV, the Content Committee assess your pitch against the following criteria:

  1. Creativity: RMITV values a wide scope of content, and is looking for engaging and well written stories to tell that we may have not told in the past.

  2. Audience: RMITV wants to engage its members and main audience base and produce content that will consistently do this.

  3. Values: As an organisation that prides itself on training people to work in the entertainment industry, RMITV wants to ensure its key values of Engagement, Diversity and Opportunity are upheld with all productions. Additionally, that all content made with RMITV will uphold high moral standards in its content and production expectations.

  4. Industry Relevance: As a training organisation and networking hub, RMITV wants to ensure its members are getting high value experiences from the production and gaining accurate and valuable industry experience and connections.

  5. Feasibility: All productions need to have a logistical plan for how it will be made and distributed, in an affordable and timely manner that falls within RMITV’s timeframes and scope.

  6. Presentation: To pitch is to excite a stakeholder in financing and supporting your production, and how you present yourself and respect their time is of utmost importance.
