MIFF 2022 Short Film Review - Horse Brothers

A weirdo nightmare comedy going at exactly 2 horsepower (because it features two horses).

Horse Brothers is a nonsensical ride, that knows it makes little sense, and doesn’t care if you can follow what barely resembles a plot. Narrated by Anton the Horse (Guy Maddin), it follows his owners Frodo and his Brother, after a supposed deal-gone-wrong forces the three of them to reevaluate their relationships, long established pasts that these 9 minutes simply have no time to get into. Serving send-ups of horror/mystery tropes, deliberately hammy performances, and a harsh grainy effect over the entire short, this short still maintains its own comedic identity so as not to rely on any preconceived notions of storytelling. Will keep you on your toes until the shocking, unpredictable, and quite frankly hysterical ending.
