The best part of the screening was the little black cupcakes that were handed out outside the cinema afterwards, almost like a little treat for slugging through the disappointment that was this movie.

Just a month after the release of Dev Patel’s Monkey Man we get yet another thrilling directorial debut entering into the action subgenre - putting emphasis on crazy fight choreography - in Moritz Mohr’s brand new sci-fi bonanza Boy Kills World.

Monkey Man tells the story of a nameless young man, referred to in the credits as “Kid” and using the self-applied alias “Bobby”, a fighter at an underground boxing ring in Yatana, as he attempts to infiltrate the ranks of the powerful upper class to enact violent revenge for the massacre of his village - a story that mirrors the Hindu epic of Hanuman, the white monkey. 

Few things in cinema are as certain as the Liam Neeson action movies released at least once or twice a year for the past decade and a half.

Overall it was a great time seeing all these short films, and even if the films themselves weren’t always entertaining, witnessing the audience’s reactions absolutely made up for that.

Continuing the stylistic trend of Johnson’s previous work, especially his sci-fi mockumentary Operation Avalanche, at times BlackBerry feels like a documentary, which suits the true story it’s based on very well.

As the feature debut from directors Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick - the editors of Searching, the film goes to town on inventive editing techniques and uses all the comforts of technology that we take for granted, twisting them into complete discomfort for a layer of tension that stays through almost the whole film.

The true purpose of this kind of movie is to shock, and shock it does.

Herzog has created a film that magnifies the sensitive balance of nature, simultaneously terrifying and touching, the parallels of science and art, the juxtaposition of the volcano’s fascinating beauty yet ultimate destructive force, and the deaths and the lives of Katia and Maurice Krafft.

Halloween Ends concludes this trilogy on a high note, with much more confident direction than the previous film, and the bold cinematography of a 70’s slasher but with that same modern sheen, smooth camera movement, and stark, moody lighting.
