Steven Soderbergh continues his prolific ‘post-retirement’ run with Black Bag, a tightly-wound spy thriller that is as cleverly composed as it is devilishly paranoid.

With complex, figurative ideas, eccentric leading performances, and a tense atmosphere, Cuckoo leads with promise.

The result is a refreshingly modern and idiosyncratic film that feels almost antithetical to the filmic formula that the studio system often caters for, and left me excited that a filmmaker like Shyamalan is still exercising his creative hand in original and tonally ambitious ways. 

Rewatching The Phantom Menace sent me far beyond the realms of good or bad; I left with an admiration for a deeply strange film, and a slight cynicism that we may never quite see the likes of it again.

Behind the flashing neon lights, Mars Express’ messy and complicated core is a delight to unpack and crucially, is without the comfort of easy answers. While it’s not exactly reinventing the wheel, its entangled approach to familiar concepts positions it uniquely, and is well worth the price of admission.
