Live Performance Review - Nijinsky

John Neumeier’s Nijinsky, performed by The Australian Ballet, is nothing short of a triumph. From the moment the curtain rises, the production sweeps the audience into the opulent and emotionally charged world of Vaslav Nijinsky, capturing both his brilliance and his tragic decline with extraordinary depth and artistry.

Callum Linnane delivers a breathtaking performance in the title role. His portrayal of Nijinsky is powerful and compelling, balancing technical precision with raw emotion. Every movement tells a story, drawing us deeper into the mind of a genius grappling with his inner demons. It’s a performance that lingers long after the final bow, a testament to his skill and dedication.

The entire company brings their absolute best, each dancer fully committed to the production’s grandeur and intensity. The choreography is intricate and evocative, paying homage to Nijinsky’s revolutionary style while also charting his descent into madness with haunting beauty. The emotional weight of the piece is carried flawlessly by the ensemble, making every scene feel alive with energy and purpose.

Visually, Nijinsky is a masterpiece. The set design is elegant and regal, transporting the audience to the golden age of early 20th-century ballet. The lavish costumes are another highlight – stunning in their detail and historical accuracy, they add an extra layer of sophistication and grandeur to the production. From the richly adorned attire of the Parisian elite to the striking designs worn in Nijinsky’s iconic performances, every costume enhances the storytelling in a deeply immersive way.

Adding to the production’s impact is the phenomenal orchestral accompaniment. The music swells and fades harmoniously with the dancers, creating an atmosphere that is both emotionally charged and musically exquisite. The orchestration is lush and dynamic, heightening the drama of Nijinsky’s journey.

Nijinsky is a breathtaking tribute to one of ballet’s most enigmatic figures. Every aspect of this production – performance, choreography, design, and music – comes together in a spectacle that is as moving as it is visually and technically impressive. A truly indelible experience.
