MIFF 2022 Short Film Review - Ampangabagat Nin Talakba Ha Likol (It's Raining Frogs Outside)

Why was this short scary? Why did it have to be scary? I went into this thinking, ‘my, what a silly name, It's Raining Frogs Outside,’ and rain frogs it did! We spend almost five minutes in the glorious rain, frogs in freefall and the world at peace.

When the cameraperson gets spicy and films underwater, or Maya turns into a 3d digital avatar battling an infestation, that’s when I lose touch with why I came here. The slapstick is a real driving force for about 20% of this one, but in what is essentially a mental breakdown told through metaphors and symbolism, outside of voluminous ribbits, is totally unnerving.

It’s Raining Frogs Outside is screening as part of the International Shorts 1 program at the Melbourne International Film Festival, running in cinemas August 4-21 and online August 11-28. For tickets and more info, click here.
